Layers
of Time

The rocks under our feet are stacked like the pages of a history book. Today you'll learn to read them — then you will predict the age of fossils before we check.

Before we start — you've seen stripes in a cliff or a road cut into a hill — what do you think those layers are?

Rock forms in layers

Bits of sand and mud settle to the bottom of seas and lakes in flat sheets. Over a very long time they pile up and harden into layers of rock — one on top of another.

Quick check, together: When a new layer of mud settles, does it land on top of the older layers or underneath them?
Answer: On top — each new layer settles on top of the older ones.

Deeper means older

Because each new layer lands on top, the deepest layer is the oldest and the top layer is the youngest. Scientists call this the law of superposition.

Quick check, together: In a stack of undisturbed rock layers, where do you look for the oldest rock — the top or the bottom?
Answer: The bottom layer is oldest; the top layer is youngest.

Fossils are time stamps

A fossil's layer tells us its age. An index fossil is a creature that lived for only a short time but spread far and wide — so wherever you find it, you know that layer is the same age.

Quick check, together: Why is a fossil that lived for only a short time more useful for dating a rock than one that lived for hundreds of millions of years?
Answer: Because it's only found in rocks from that short time, so it pins down a narrow age — that makes it a good index fossil.
