Atoms Rearrange

When things burn, rust, or fizz, new stuff appears — but where does the matter go? Today you'll learn the rule, then you will predict whether the mass changes.

Before we start — picture a log burning down to a little pile of ash — does that missing stuff just disappear, or go somewhere?

Everything is built from atoms

Atoms are the tiny building blocks of all matter. They join together into molecules — like two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom making a molecule of water.

Quick check, together: How many atoms, and of which kinds, are in one molecule of water (H2O)?
Answer: Three atoms — two hydrogen and one oxygen (water, H₂O).

A reaction rearranges atoms

In a chemical reaction, the bonds between atoms break and the atoms regroup into brand-new molecules. The starting stuff is the reactants; the new stuff is the products.

Quick check, together: In a reaction, are brand-new atoms created — or are the same atoms just rearranged into new molecules?
Answer: The same atoms are just rearranged into new molecules — none are created or destroyed.

Mass is never lost

Since atoms are only rearranged — never created or destroyed — there is the same number of every atom before and after. So the total mass stays exactly the same. This is the law of conservation of mass.

Quick check, together: If you start with 10 atoms and react them, how many atoms do you have afterward?
Answer: Still exactly 10 — atoms are never gained or lost (conservation of mass).
